Joint health and the method: weight, inflammation, training, nutrition
Your knees hurt on the stairs, your back by evening, your shoulder keeps you from sleeping on your side—and the first thing you hear is: “age, protect your joints, reduce the load.” The method looks at this differently. Three things destroy joints, and all three are manageable: excess weight, which presses on the knees with four times its weight, inflammation fed by sugar and flour, and muscles that have disappeared and stopped supporting the joint. This page is a map: how nutrition reduces inflammation, how weight comes off the knees, how to train when it hurts, and which joint supplements work and which are sold for nothing.

Three manageable causes
The first is weight. When walking, the knee takes four times your body weight; on stairs, six to seven times. Five extra kilograms means twenty to thirty with every step—tens of thousands of steps a day. The second is inflammation: sugar and flour, through insulin and glycation products, maintain silent inflammation in the body that eats away at cartilage and ligaments; remove them and inflammation falls within weeks, visible in C-reactive protein. The third is muscle: joints are held not by ligaments but by the surrounding muscles, and when they decline by a percentage a year after 40, the joint is left without support. None of this is treated by “taking it easy.” Section — joints, weight, and inflammation.
What the method does to the joints
| Mechanism | What happens | Time frame | Article |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight comes off | the load on the knees and feet falls fourfold relative to the weight lost | from the first kg | knees and excess weight |
| Insulin falls | less inflammation, less swelling in the joint | 2-4 weeks | sugar and joint inflammation |
| Flour and sugar are removed | fewer glycation products that “cross-link” collagen | months | sugar and joint inflammation |
| Strength training | muscles take the load, relieving the joint | 6-8 weeks | training with joint pain |
| Protein, omega-3, D | building material for cartilage and bones, less inflammation | months | nutrition for joints |
Joints, weight, and inflammation
The most common story: the knees began to hurt along with an extra ten kilograms, and the orthopedist said, “lose weight.” That is true, but not the whole story: fat is not only a load but also an organ that produces inflammatory signals, and the knee hurts not only because of pressure. On the method, the first kilograms are water, and the knees feel lighter as early as the second week—before the number on the scales changes noticeably. Gout is a separate matter: low-carb nutrition with it requires caution during the first weeks. knees and excess weight, sugar and joint inflammation, joints after 40, gout and low-carb nutrition.
Training when it hurts
“Protecting” a joint means weakening the muscles that support it and making things worse. The method’s rule: train around the pain, not through it. If the knee hurts—chair squats with a shortened range of motion, glute bridges, extensions; for the back—core work and planks, not weighted bends; for the shoulder—scapular work and a pain-free range of motion. Walking is almost always possible and necessary, on a level surface, in good shoes, for as long as it does not increase pain the next day. Section — training with joint pain: training with knee pain, squats and knees, back pain and core, walking with joint pain. The foundation — training according to the method.
With joint pain, you can and should
- Walking on level ground in good shoes
- Strength training with a shortened range of motion
- Glute bridges, extensions, planks
- Swimming and cycling for knee problems
- Stretching and mobility every day
- Increase the load by 10% per week
Not allowed while it hurts
- Running and jumping with knee and foot problems
- Deep weighted squats through pain
- Weighted bends with back pain
- Overhead pressing through shoulder pain
- “Work the pain out” with a workout
- Complete rest for longer than 3 days
What to eat for your joints and which supplements work
The foundation is a plate without sugar or flour: this is the main anti-inflammatory “remedy,” and it is free. Next, in order of strength of evidence: omega-3 from fatty fish or capsules, 2-3 g with active inflammation; vitamin D according to test results; protein, 1.6 g per kg—cartilage and ligaments are built from it; collagen or gelatin, 10-15 g a day—moderate but genuine evidence for pain and cartilage; glucosamine and chondroitin—evidence is conflicting, the effect is small and does not occur in everyone. Turmeric, MSM, and hyaluronic acid in tablets have little or no evidence. Section — nutrition for joints: collagen and gelatin, omega-3 for joints, glucosamine and chondroitin, vitamin D, K2, and bones.
Weight comes first. Chair squats, glute bridges, seated leg extensions. Walking on level ground. No running or jumping while it hurts. Shoes with cushioning. Omega-3 and collagen are optional; weight and muscle are essential.
Core — plank, «dead bug», bird dog. Glutes — bridge. Walk every day. Do not sit for more than an hour at a time. Weighted bends and twists — no while it hurts. The pelvic floor in women is part of the core.
Shoulder blade and rotator cuff work with a resistance band, pain-free range of motion without weight. Overhead presses and pull-ups — later. Do not sleep on the painful side. After 45, shoulder pain is often «frozen shoulder», and it requires patience and a doctor.
Weight comes first. Supportive shoes. Calf raises, working the foot on a ball. Walk barefoot on soft ground. Do not run until walking is pain-free.
When to see a doctor, not go to the gym
A joint that is hot, red, and swollen is inflammation that needs to be examined, not trained. Night pain at rest that wakes you up. Morning stiffness lasting more than an hour is a sign of inflammatory arthritis, not wear and tear. Pain after an injury with a pop and instability. Pain that increases week after week despite a gentle routine. And a gout attack means no gym and no «toughing it out». In all other cases, appropriate exercise treats the problem better than rest, as confirmed by studies on knee osteoarthritis: strength training reduces pain more than painkillers in the long term.
Common mistakes
- «Protecting» a joint with complete rest — muscles waste away, and things get worse
- Trying to lose weight for your knees by running — your knees will not tolerate it
- Taking glucosamine without cutting out sugar
- Pushing through pain with «below-parallel» squats
- Taking painkillers before training so you cannot feel the pain
- Dismiss morning stiffness lasting an hour as «age»
Frequently asked questions
Can you walk if your knees hurt?
In most cases, you need to walk on level ground, in good shoes, for as long as you can without increased pain the next day. Walking nourishes cartilage — it has no blood vessels and lives through movement.
How long until the knees feel better with the method?
The first relief comes in 2-3 weeks: fluid and some inflammation subside. Noticeable improvement comes in 2-3 months, once 5-7 kg have been lost and the muscles have switched on.
Do cracking joints mean wear and tear?
Cracking without pain is gas in the joint fluid and is harmless. Cracking with pain or locking — see a doctor.
Will the method help with osteoarthritis?
Cartilage will not grow back, but pain and function in knee osteoarthritis improve more with weight loss and strength training than with any pills. These are data, not hope.
What matters more — supplements or training?
Training and weight. Supplements are 10% extra with the right foundation and zero without it.
What to do tomorrow
Cut out sugar and flour
The first anti-inflammatory step for a joint. It works within 2-4 weeks and is checked by C-reactive protein.
Walk for 20-30 minutes on level ground
Wear cushioned shoes. Do as much as does not cause pain the next day. Increase by 5 minutes per week.
Three exercises around the pain
Knee — bridge, seated leg extensions, chair squats. Back — plank, «dead bug», bridge. Shoulder — resistance-band work for the shoulder blade.
Protein and fish
1,6 g of protein per kg, oily fish twice a week. Vitamin D based on test results.
