Omega-3 for joints: the dose that works
Omega-3 are one of two supplements for joints with solid evidence. For rheumatoid arthritis, they are included in recommendations: they reduce pain, morning stiffness, and the need for painkillers. For osteoarthritis, the effect is more modest, but the mechanism is the same — EPA dampens inflammatory signals in the joint. There is one trap: the dose. 300 mg from a “fish oil” capsule does nothing. Section — nutrition for joints.
How omega-3 work in a joint
Inflammation in a joint occurs through substances that the body builds from fats. Omega-6 — sunflower oil, fast food — is used to build pro-inflammatory substances. Omega-3, EPA, and DHA are used to build anti-inflammatory substances and those that resolve inflammation. The ratio on your plate determines which ones are built. On a “Western” plate, the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is 15-20 to one; it should be 4 to one or lower. Removing sunflower oil and adding fish shifts the ratio twofold without capsules.

How to get 2-3 g of EPA+DHA
| Source | Serving | EPA+DHA |
|---|---|---|
| Mackerel | 150 g | ~4 g |
| Salmon | 150 g | ~3 g |
| Herring | 150 g | ~2,5 g |
| Sardines | 100 g | ~1,5 g |
| Omega-3 concentrate, capsule | 1 pc | 0,5-0,8 g — check the label |
| “Fish oil 1000 mg,” inexpensive capsule | 1 pc | ~0,3 g — 8 capsules needed |
What to do in practice
Fish three or four times a week — mackerel, salmon, herring, sardines — covers the dose without capsules and provides protein, D, iodine, and selenium. If you do not eat that much fish — choose a triglyceride-form concentrate with 500+ mg of EPA+DHA per capsule, 3-5 capsules a day with food. Remove sunflower and corn oil; replace them with olive oil and butter. Time frame — three months, then assess pain and stiffness. About omega-3 in general — omega-3; about oils — fats in the diet.
Mistakes
- 300 mg “for joints” — that is nothing
- Flaxseed oil instead of fish
- Omega-3 with sugar and sunflower oil on the plate — going against the tide
- Expecting results in two weeks
- Rancid capsules — harm instead of benefit
Frequently asked questions
Is 3 g too much?
Up to 3 g per day is safe according to all regulators. Above that — only with a doctor. If you take anticoagulants — discuss any dose.
Will it definitely help with osteoarthritis?
Moderate and not for everyone. But there is no harm, and the benefits for blood vessels and the brain are a bonus. Three months is an honest test.
Omega-3 or collagen?
For inflammation and swelling — omega-3 come first. For “mechanical” pain without swelling — collagen. You can use both.
