Coming back after a long break: no perfection and no scales
Three weeks of vacation, plus four on the scales, and the thought: “everything I had is lost, I have to start from zero.” No. Of those four kilograms, three are water, which will go away within a week. Muscles remember exertion for months, and the brain remembers habits — the second time, they return three times faster. It isn’t the break that derails your return, but the first two steps. Section — motivation and setbacks.
Two steps that derail your return
The first is stepping on the scales on day one: a number inflated by water and glycogen, “plus four,” and your hands drop until Monday. The second is trying to start perfectly: 16/8, three strength workouts, a journal, everything at once — by day two, a setback and the conclusion “I can’t.” The opposite works: a week without scales and one anchor. About water — water and weight fluctuations.
The first week back
Day 1: kitchen
Audit the kitchen, just like at the very beginning: sugar and flour out of the house, eggs, cottage cheese, and vegetables at eye level. One evening, one time.
Days 1–7: one anchor
Breakfast according to the method. Just that. The rest — however it works out. One anchor supports the day better than five rules.
12/12 window
Dinner before 20:00, breakfast after 8:00. Not 16/8 — later.
20 minutes of walking
Daily. No workouts — for now.
No scales
Seven days. The water will go away, and the first number will be honest.
Returning based on the length of the break
| Break | What returned | What to do | Time to get back to normal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 weeks, vacation | water, habits still in place | kitchen, window, walking | one week |
| 1–2 months, illness | water, some habits | one week of anchoring, then training at 50% | 2–3 weeks |
| 3–6 months | water, some fat, habits gone | one week of anchoring, two weeks with one habit at a time | one to one and a half months |
| A year or more | like the first time, but the brain remembers | start over, but faster | 2–3 months |
Training after a break
Muscle memory is real: the nuclei in the fibers built by previous training remain for years, and strength returns in 2–4 weeks instead of months. The first workout — half your previous weights, two sets. The second — 60%. After two weeks — your previous weights. Those who start with their previous weights on day one get muscle soreness for a week and an injury. Motivation will return after the first workout, not before. The foundation — the first month on the method.
Mistakes
- Weighing yourself on day one
- Starting with 16/8 and three strength workouts at once
- Training with your previous weights
- “Working off” the vacation by starving yourself
- Waiting for Monday — it’s Wednesday today, and that’s okay
Frequently asked questions
Gained 5 kg during vacation — how much of it is fat?
After three weeks, at most 1–1.5 kg is fat. The rest is water and glycogen, which will go away in 7–10 days on the method.
It’s embarrassing to return to the trainer or group.
The trainer has seen hundreds of people return. Write “I’m back, starting with half” — that’s all. Shame is part of the “all-or-nothing” mindset.
Is it really easier the second time?
Yes. Habits follow a well-trodden path, muscles rely on memory, and the method is no longer new. Usually, it’s three times faster.
