First month on the method: what happens week by week
The first month using the method is not a month of weight loss, but a month of restructuring. The body switches its fuel from sugar to fat, habits shift from six eating occasions to three, and the mindset moves from “not allowed” to “no need.” Week by week, it looks very different: the first is tough, the second confusing, the third steady, and the fourth is when the results become visible. Below is what happens each week and what to do to make it to the fourth.
Sugar withdrawal
Cravings for sweets, low mood, apathy. 1-2 kg of water weight is lost. According to the method, only these three days are difficult.
Keto flu and salt
Weakness, headache, sluggishness — almost always due to a lack of sodium and water. Salt 3-5 g and water 2-2,5 l relieve most of the symptoms.
Transition
The body learns to work on fats. Hunger between meals disappears, but energy still fluctuates. Weight may plateau — this is normal.
Steady energy
Brain fog goes away, sleep becomes deeper, and cravings for sweets weaken. The first changes in clothing fit and waist size appear.
The result becomes visible
Weight continues to decrease, but more slowly than in the first days. The main change is that you stop thinking about food between meals.
Week one: what happens and why it is so difficult
The first three days are the hardest, and the method says it directly: «only the first three days are difficult, then the brain will adapt». Sugar goes away — and with it the familiar glucose swings on which half of your mood depended. Your mood may drop, and apathy and irritability may appear. This is not a character flaw, but the body’s resistance, and it is temporary.
Water also leaves the body: for every gram of glycogen, the body holds about three grams of water, and glycogen is used up during the first days on a low-carbohydrate diet. Hence the loss of 1-2 кг per week, which is not fat, but is not deceptive either — swelling goes down, and it shows on the face. What the body feels day by day is described in the article first three days.
By the end of the week, what is often called the keto flu may appear: weakness, headache, and lethargy. In most cases, there is one reason — sodium left with the water, and it was not replenished. 3-5 г of salt per day, salty mineral water, magnesium, and potassium from avocado and greens solve this within one or two days.

Week Two: why your weight stalls and you feel strange
The second week is the most confusing. The water weight has already gone, fat has not yet started to disappear noticeably, and the scales stand still. At the same time, the body switches to fat as its main fuel: some days you have plenty of energy, while others feel sluggish. This is a transition, not a setback.
This is where two out of three people break: some decide that it «doesn’t work», while others start cutting back on food to «get the weight moving». The latter is worse: a deficit in the second week is added to the adaptation process, and by the third week real fatigue sets in. The rule in this method is the opposite — eat until comfortably full, with your entire daily intake spread across two or three meals. Eating too little is also a mistake, and during the second week it costs the most.
What helps: the same eating window every day, a substantial dinner, salt in your water in the morning, and patience with the scales. How to structure your day so that this is easy is explained in the article one day on the method.
What to change and what not to touch week by week
| Week | What to do | What not to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Remove sugar, bread, grains, and fruit. Salt and water. Three meals without snacks | Narrow the window, add workouts, weigh yourself every day |
| 2 | Keep the window at 12-14 hours, have a substantial dinner, go to bed on time | Cut portions, “speed up” with fasting, change the plan every day |
| 3 | Shift the first meal by an hour, add walks or 20 minutes at home | Set records at the gym, introduce cheat meals “for successes” |
| 4 | Compare photos and waist with the first day, not just weight | Decide that “this is too little” based on the number on the scale |
Be prepared for your mood to drop and apathy to set in for a few days. This is the body's temporary resistance; it will all pass.
Week three: steady energy and the first changes
By the third week, most people notice what they started this for: steady energy without post-meal crashes, a clear head, deep sleep, and a noticeably lower craving for sweets. Hunger between meals almost completely disappears — the “no snacking” rule no longer requires effort. These changes are discussed in the article energy and “brain fog”.
At this point, it makes sense to add the second and third steps: shift the first meal an hour later if you want a 16/8 window, and add 20-30 minutes of movement at home three times a week. Earlier is not advisable: one adjustment at a time. How to set up the window — the 16/8 window; how to incorporate workouts — movement in the method.
Week four: how to understand that the method works
Scales are the worst judge of the first month: water, salt, your cycle, and yesterday’s dinner all affect them. With this method, results are assessed by three things: well-being and energy, your waist and clothing, and sleep. If after a month you no longer think about food between meals, sleep more deeply, and your jeans fit more loosely, the method is working, even if the scales show minus two rather than minus eight.
What to measure and how to see progress where the scales stay silent is explained in the article what to track instead of the scales. If after 4-6 weeks nothing changes — neither your waist nor your energy — that’s a reason to review your day, not double your efforts: most often, the issue is hidden carbohydrates, undereating, or sleep. The article plateau: why your weight is stuck explains this.
Four things that get you to week four
Salt from day one
Don't wait for a headache; prevent it: a pinch in water in the morning, mineral water during the day.
Filling plates
Half vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter fats — until you're full. No calorie deficit is needed in the first month.
One change at a time
Food first. The eating window from the second week. Workouts from the third.
7-8 hours of sleep
When you're sleep-deprived, cravings for sweets beat any method. Going to bed on time is part of the method.
Common mistakes in the first month
- Starting everything at once: diet, 16/8 fasting, and workouts in the same week
- Cutting portions in the second week when your weight plateaus
- Weighing yourself every morning and drawing conclusions
- Hidden carbohydrates: sauces, “healthy” bars, handfuls of nuts
- Enduring keto flu instead of increasing salt and water intake
- Quitting on day 10 — one week before it gets easier
Frequently Asked Questions
How much can you lose in the first month?
The number is different for everyone and depends on your starting weight, sleep, and how much water retention and swelling there was. The method does not promise timelines: the first month is about adjustment, not a number.
When will cravings for sweets pass?
The acute phase lasts for the first three days. They become noticeably weaker by the end of the second or third week, when the body runs on fat. Completely—for everyone it is different, usually in 1-2 months.
Can I train from day one?
Walking—yes. Strength training and intense cardio are better from the third week, when adaptation is over: during the first week, they will only add fatigue.
What should I do if I slip up in the second week?
Eat the next meal as usual. One slip-up costs one meal, not a month. The analysis is in the article «what to do after a slip-up».
