Food journal without obsession: three days a week, no grams
“I eat properly, but my weight is stuck.” A week of journaling reveals: milk in four coffees, “just tasting” while cooking, handfuls of nuts, cheese by the fridge at 22:00. Not because you are deceiving yourself, but because the brain does not count what was not considered “food.” A journal is not control, but a map. Section — rituals and tracking.
What to record and what not to record
Record: when, what, and approximately how much in words — “a plate,” “a handful,” “a piece.” Add one word about your state if you ate outside your schedule: “tired,” “bored,” “after an argument.” Do not record: grams, calories, macros. Weighing salad is a path to obsession, and this method is not about numbers. The goal is to see the pattern, not to count.

How to read it after a week
Not “how much you ate,” but “where it repeats.” Something at 16:00 for three days in a row is a loop, and it has a signal: habit loop. Snacks between meals — the window is not holding, and this is more often dinner without protein. “Tired” next to food — sleep. Milk in coffee four times — 100 kcal and insulin during the pause. The conclusion is one item for next week, in the weekly review. The full plateau topic — plateau.
Where obsession begins
When the journal is kept to “not exceed” a limit rather than to see. When food is postponed because “I didn’t record it.” When the calorie number determines your mood. If this feels familiar, close the journal and keep only weekly measurements; if anxiety around food does not go away, talk to a specialist. The method does not require control of every gram; it requires three meals of whole foods. Morning ritual without a journal — morning on the method.
Mistakes
- A calorie app instead of a note
- Seven days in a row — abandoned in the third week
- Recording only the “right” days
- Reading the journal as a verdict, not a map
- Not recording “little spoonfuls” — that is exactly what you need to find
Frequently asked questions
Phone note or paper?
Anything you always have with you. Paper lasts longer, but it does not tempt you to count calories.
How long should I keep it?
First month — three days a week. Then — a week during a plateau or slips. It is not needed all the time.
Photograph your food?
It works no worse than writing things down and is faster. A folder on your phone, review it on Sunday.
