DOMS or injury: how to tell growth from damage
On the second day after your first strength workout, everything hurts, and your first thought is — «I must have injured something». No: these are micro-damages to the fibers that make the muscle stronger, and they will be gone in three days. But some pain is not growth, and you need to recognize it immediately — because you must not train through it. Section — strength and nutrition.
Differences
| DOMS | Injury | Overtraining |
|---|---|---|
| When | after 24–48 hours | at the moment, suddenly |
| Where | in the muscle, widespread, symmetrical | at a specific point or in a joint |
| Type | dull, aching, «pulling» | sharp, stabbing, shooting |
| With movement | decreases after warming up | gets worse |
| Swelling, bruising | none | possible |
| How long | 2–3 days, up to 5 for a beginner | does not go away, gets worse |
| What to do | walking, sleep, protein, next workout as planned | stop, cold during the first 24 hours, rest, see a doctor if it is not better after 3 days |
DOMS: what helps and what does not
What helps: light movement — walking gets the blood flowing; sleep; protein; warmth from the second day; the next workout as planned, which reduces the pain. What does not help: complete rest, stretching through pain, painkillers — they suppress the signal the muscle needs for growth. Severe DOMS in a beginner during the first two weeks is normal; in an experienced person after a familiar load, it is a sign of insufficient recovery. Read more — recovery and muscle pain, active recovery.
Injury: do not try to «work it out»
Sudden pain at the moment it happens, a pop, a joint instead of a muscle, pain that gets worse rather than easing after warm-up — stop for today. During the first 24 hours — apply cold for 15 minutes several times, rest, and keep the affected area above heart level if there is swelling. Not better after three days — see a doctor. You must not train through sharp pain, either with painkillers or a brace. More about joints — training with joint pain.
See a doctor immediately
- A pop followed by pain and instability
- Joint swelling within hours
- You cannot put weight on it or raise your arm
- Numbness, tingling
- Pain at night that wakes you
Frequently asked questions
Can you train with DOMS?
Yes, if the pain decreases after warm-up. Other muscles — always. The same muscles — moderately; it speeds up recovery.
No DOMS — did the workout not work?
No. DOMS is a sign of a new stimulus, not growth. Progress without DOMS is normal after a month.
Is lower-back pain after deadlifts an injury?
Aching in the muscles along the spine the next day — DOMS. Sharp pain in one spot during a pull, shooting down the leg — injury and a doctor.
