First trip to the gym: what to bring, where to go, and what to say to the trainer
Nobody is looking at you. That’s the first thing you need to know: at the gym, everyone is busy with themselves and their phone between sets. Second: you’re not going “to the gym” in general, but to the barbell rack and dumbbell rack—two places where the whole method lives. A trainer for five sessions isn’t a luxury, but the cheapest investment in technique. Section — programs.
From the door to your first set
Bring with you
Flat, firm-soled sneakers (not running shoes with a soft heel), comfortable clothes, 0,5 l of water with a pinch of salt, a towel, and a phone with a workout log.
Where to go
Walk past the treadmills and “leg machines.” Free weights area: a barbell rack, a bench, and a dumbbell rack. That’s all you need.
First workout
Five movements: goblet squat with a dumbbell, Romanian deadlift with dumbbells, dumbbell bench press, one-arm dumbbell row, and step-up. 2 sets of 10, light weight. The goal is to get comfortable.
From the second or third session — the barbell
Empty bar 15-20 kg: squats in the rack, deadlifts. With a trainer for technique.
Workout log
Weight and reps. From day one.
Trainer: how to choose one and what to say
You need one for 4-6 sessions to learn the squat, deadlift, and bench press—then you can do it yourself. What to say: “I want to learn the basic barbell movements: squat, deadlift, bench press, and row. Three times a week for full-body workouts. I don’t want isolation exercises or cardio.” A good trainer will nod. A bad one will suggest “losing weight on the treadmill first” or say “women don’t need barbells”—leave. Watch how they train people themselves: if their clients squat with a barbell, they’re your trainer. Program — three-day full-body.
Etiquette that removes 90% of self-consciousness
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Ask “are you finished?” before taking equipment | normal and expected |
| Return plates and dumbbells to their place | the main gym rule |
| Put a towel on the bench | hygiene |
| Don’t sit on the bench looking at your phone for more than 2 minutes between sets | people are waiting |
| You can ask for a spot on the bench press | a normal request |
| Headphones are fine; answer “can I work in with you?”—yes | the rule for sharing equipment |

Don’t do this in the first month
- An hour on the treadmill “to start”
- Going around the machines without a plan
- Group “fat-burning” classes instead of strength training
- Maximum weight “to show off”
- It’s okay to feel shy about asking for help
