Measurement protocol: what and when to measure to see results
After three months, you will look in the mirror and see no difference — your eyes get used to seeing yourself every day. Then you will find a photo from the beginning and won't believe it. Measurements are not for control, but so that in a month you have something to compare. Five minutes once a week. Section — scales, tape measure and photos.
Protocol
| What | When | How | What counts as success |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | once a week, one day | morning, after using the toilet, before eating, during the same cycle phase | -0,3-0,7 kg/week after the first two weeks |
| Waist at the navel | every 2 weeks | tape measure horizontal, exhale, do not pull in | -1 cm in 2 weeks |
| Hips | every 2 weeks | widest point | slower than the waist — normal |
| Thigh and shoulder | once a month | middle, one leg and arm | do not decrease — muscles are intact |
| Photos | once a month | front, side, back, the same underwear, the same wall, daylight | visible after 2-3 months |
| Strength | every workout | working weights and repetitions | increasing — muscles are growing |
Starting day
Do everything from the table on one morning. Take a photo even if you don't want to look at yourself: it is the only picture that will be proof in six months. Write one line in your phone notes: date, weight, waist, hips. Not in an app with charts — they encourage you to weigh yourself every day.
How to read the table after a month
Weight minus 3, waist minus 4 — perfect. Weight minus 1, waist minus 4 — recomposition: your body is changing faster than your weight. Weight minus 3, waist 0 — water or muscle is being lost; check your protein intake and strength training. Weight 0, waist 0, strength 0 for four weeks — a plateau; see the checklist in the article plateau. Why weight is not an indicator — why scales lie.
Mistakes
- Daily weighing with conclusions
- Measurements at different times of day
- Photos in different lighting and underwear
- Not recording the initial numbers
- Skipping a measurement because you “don't want to see it”
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a measurement app?
A note in your phone is enough. Apps encourage daily weighing and draw charts based on noise.
What if I have an irregular cycle?
Weigh yourself once a week on the same day and look at the monthly average. The waist is more reliable.
Should I show the photos to anyone?
Only for yourself. This is not a “before and after” for social media; it is a tool that keeps you from quitting.
