Why the scales lie: seven reasons your weight jumps 2 kg overnight
64.2 on Thursday, 65.9 on Friday, 64.5 on Saturday. You did not eat or burn one and a half kilograms of fat in 24 hours — that would require 10 000 kcal in either direction. Everything that moves on the scales from one day to the next is water and intestinal contents. And this movement has exactly seven causes. Section — scales, measuring tape and photos.
Seven reasons
| Cause | How much | How long | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salt: a salty dinner, sauce, cheese | +0,5-1,5 kg | 1-2 days | normal; salt is needed on the method |
| Carbohydrates: every gram of glycogen holds 3 g of water | +1-2 kg | 2-3 days | it is not fat; it will leave with the glycogen |
| Cycle: luteal phase and before your period | +1-2 kg | 5-7 days | do not weigh yourself from the 22nd to the 3rd day |
| Lack of sleep: cortisol retains water | +0,5-1 kg | 1-2 days | sleep; do not count this as a result |
| Workout: micro-inflammation and water in the muscles | +0,5-1,5 kg | 2-3 days | a sign that your muscles are working |
| Intestines: food in transit for 1-3 days | +0,5-2 kg | until you use the toilet | weigh yourself after using the toilet |
| Time of day | +1-2 kg by evening | until morning | only in the morning |
The arithmetic that reassures you
A kilogram of fat is 7000 kcal. To gain it in 24 hours, you would need to eat 7000 more than your maintenance — that is 4 kg of cheese. To lose it, you would have to run 100 km. So everything the scales show between yesterday and today is, by definition, not fat. Fat changes by 0,3-0,7 kg per week, and you can see it only by comparing weeks, not days. How to measure honestly — body fat percentage and waist-to-height ratio.
Why the first kilograms on the method are water, and why that is good
Insulin makes the kidneys retain sodium, and sodium retains water. When you remove sugar and flour, insulin drops and the kidneys release 2-3 liters during the first week. Swelling disappears from the face, fingers and legs; the ring spins. This is not “deception,” but unloading, and it returns if you bring sugar back — hence “plus 2 kg after one cake.” After that, water stabilizes and the scales begin to show fat. In detail — water and weight fluctuations.
How to weigh yourself to see fat
Once a week
One day, in the morning, after using the toilet, before eating, without clothes.
In the same cycle phase
The 7th day compared with the 7th. The week before your period — no scales at all.
Not after salty food or a workout
If there was something the day before, move it to the next day.
Compare averages
If you weigh yourself more often, look at the weekly average, not individual days.
Your waist matters more
Once every two weeks, measure with a tape at navel level — it does not see water the way scales do.
Frequently asked questions
Is plus 2 kg after one cake fat?
No: glycogen and water. 300 g of carbohydrates hold a liter of water. It will go away after 2-3 days on the method. The cake contains no more than 100-150 g of fat.
Can I weigh myself every day and take the average?
You can, if you do not react to individual days. For most people, once a week is easier: fewer emotions, the same result.
How can my weight be higher in the morning than yesterday evening?
At night, the body does not lose water when sleep is poor and cortisol is high. One such day means nothing.
- Measurement protocol: what and when to measure to see resultsInitial measurements, weigh once a week during the same cycle phase, measure with a tape measure every two weeks, take photos once a month. One table that shows fat, not water.
- Waist-to-height ratio: one number more important than BMIDivide your waist by your height. Less than 0,5 — no visceral fat, more — there is. Why this measure predicts diabetes and heart disease better than body mass index and how to measure it.
- How to measure body fat percentage at home: tape measure, caliper, smart scalesSmart scales can be off by 5%, a caliper depends on the person using it, and DEXA costs money. What to choose, how to measure under the same conditions, and why the trend matters more than the number.
- Water and weight: why plus or minus two kilograms per day is normalThe body is 60% water, and it moves back and forth every day. The first kilograms on the method, “plus two after cake,” swelling before your period — all of this is water, not fat.
- Muscles and energy expenditure: the engine that works while you sleepA kilogram of muscle burns three times more than fat at rest and takes up glucose without insulin. Why “metabolism has slowed down” means lost muscle, and how to regain it at any age.
- Skinny fat: when BMI is normal but the body is notBMI 22, thin arms, a soft belly, 35% body fat, no strength. Where does it come from, why do diets make it worse, and what is the one thing that changes it.
