Plateau: why your weight has stalled and a six-reason checklist
Down five in a month, then zero for three weeks. In your head: “the method has stopped working.” In reality, the method is working exactly the same way, but something in you or around you has changed — and that something is almost always found after a week of honest observation. Section — plateaus and recomposition.
First: is it really a plateau?
Two weeks without change is not a plateau. It is water, your cycle, or recomposition: check your waist and working weights. If your waist is shrinking or your strength is increasing — fat is being lost, and the scales are lying. A plateau is four weeks with no change in weight AND waist AND strength. Only then — use the checklist.
Six causes ranked by frequency
| Cause | What it looks like | Check | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snacking has returned | “Just a spoonful,” handfuls of nuts, cheese by the fridge | 7-day diary with no gaps | Three meals, water in between |
| Portions have grown | Same plate, one-third more food | Weigh protein and fats for 3 days | protein 120-150 g, fats according to satiety, not habit |
| Less than 7 hours of sleep | daytime hunger, evening cravings, water retention | one week of sleep records | 7-8 hours as a priority |
| Too little salt | swelling, weight held by water | headaches, cramps, tight ring | 3-5 g of salt, 2-3 l of water |
| Same workout for 3 months | the body has adapted | working weights are not increasing | new exercises, weight, pace |
| Stress | cortisol retains water and fat on the abdomen | sleep, irritability, waking at 3-4 | walking, shorter eating window, sleep |
What not to do
Cutting calories to 1200 will cost you muscle, lower your energy expenditure, and make the next plateau lower. Adding an hour of cardio means more cortisol and hunger. Removing fats will eliminate satiety and bring back snacking. A refeed day means stress without results. A cheat meal “to boost metabolism” means plus 2 kg of water and a week of cravings. Why the body resists — set point.
Order of actions
Week 1: diary and sleep
Everything that goes into your mouth, including milk in coffee. Hours of sleep. In 70% of cases, the cause is here.
Week 2: remove what you found
Snacking — zero. Sleep — 7 hours. Salt — within the recommended amount.
Week 3: change the workout
Different exercises, plus weight, different pace. Muscles need a new stimulus.
Week 4: the window
If everything is done and nothing changes — make the window an hour longer or remove one meal. Not the calories within the window.
No change after 6 weeks
Tests: TSH, insulin, cortisol. A plateau can be medical.
Frequently asked questions
Does a plateau mean I have reached my ideal weight?
Sometimes yes: if your waist-to-height ratio is below 0.5, your strength is increasing, and you feel well — this is your weight, not a plateau. Next — maintenance and muscle building.
How long can a plateau last?
Not until the cause has been found. Usually 2-4 weeks of the checklist — and your weight starts moving.
Should I weigh myself more often to catch movement?
No. Once a week plus your waist measurement. Daily weigh-ins are noise, not data.
