Potassium from food: avocado instead of banana
“But what about bananas?” — the first question about potassium on the method. The answer: one avocado contains more potassium than two bananas, and without 30 grams of sugar. Potassium supports blood pressure, heart rhythm, and muscles; more of it is lost on a low-carb diet, and it should be replenished with food, not pills. Section — electrolytes and water.
Why and how much
Potassium is an intracellular electrolyte, paired with sodium: sodium is outside, potassium is inside, and together they regulate water, blood pressure, and signal transmission in muscles and nerves. The daily intake is 3,5-4,7 g. Most people do not get enough even on a regular diet; during the first weeks of a low-carb diet, losses are higher. Signs of deficiency: weakness, cramps, palpitations, constipation, and swelling despite normal salt intake.
Potassium in the method’s foods
| Food | Serving | Potassium | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avocado | 1 piece, 200 g | ~950 mg | best source |
| Salmon | 150 g | ~600 mg | plus omega-3 |
| Cooked spinach | 150 g | ~550 mg | raw — half as much by volume |
| Mushrooms | 150 g | ~450 mg | button mushrooms, oyster mushrooms |
| Broccoli | 150 g | ~450 mg | |
| Zucchini | 200 g | ~500 mg | |
| Pork, beef | 150 g | ~450 mg | meat — a notable source |
| Plain yogurt | 150 g | ~250 mg | |
| 85% dark chocolate | 30 g | ~200 mg | plus magnesium |
| Banana | 1 piece | ~420 mg | and 27 g of carbohydrates — not for the method |
A day with 4 grams of potassium
Breakfast: three eggs with spinach and half an avocado — about 800 mg. Lunch: salmon with broccoli and salad — about 1000 mg. Dinner: meat with mushrooms and zucchini — about 1000 mg. Plus nuts, chocolate, and yogurt — another 500. Total: 3,3-3,5 g without effort, and this is an ordinary method plate, not a special menu. About the plate — the plate rule; about avocado — avocado every day.
Why not from pills
Potassium is sold in pharmacies in 99 mg doses for a reason: excess potassium in the blood is dangerous for the heart, and it is not prescribed without monitoring. The body can take potassium from food and eliminate the excess; from pills — not always. The exception is a doctor’s prescription for a confirmed deficiency based on test results. Ready-made electrolyte powders with 200-400 mg of potassium are acceptable, but they do not replace avocado. Salt, which goes together with potassium, is covered in salt on a low-carb diet.
Frequently asked questions
How to check potassium?
Blood potassium is a standard test, but it shows a normal level almost every time: the body regulates it strictly. The guide is symptoms and food.
Coconut water for potassium?
It contains 600 mg of potassium per glass and 15 g of sugar. Avocado provides more without sugar.
Does potassium lower blood pressure?
Yes, this is one of the best-established effects. Potassium from food up to 4,7 g per day in people with hypertension lowers blood pressure more noticeably than salt restriction.
