Salt on a low-carbohydrate diet: how much, which kind and why more
For twenty years you have been told “less salt,” and your hand freezes over the salt shaker. On a low-carbohydrate diet, this rule needs to be turned upside down: you need more salt, and most people who “couldn’t get through” the first week quit not because of hunger, but because they did not get enough salt. Section — electrolytes and water.
Why this happens
Insulin makes the kidneys retain sodium. With bread and sugar, insulin is always high, salt accumulates — hence the “less salt” recommendations. When sugar and flour are removed, insulin falls, and the kidneys begin excreting sodium, along with water. The first few days — minus 1-2 kg of water. Potassium and magnesium leave along with sodium. Headache, weakness, brain fog and palpitations when standing up — this is not “the body adjusting,” it is sodium. Keto flu can be treated with salt within a day: keto flu.

How to add it
You cannot drink a whole spoonful in the morning — it causes nausea. Three ways: salt your food to taste without fear, add a quarter teaspoon to a glass of water with lemon in the morning and after exercise, or have bone broth or broth made from a cube as a drink during the fasting window. Salt should be spread throughout the day. In hot weather, during exercise and during a fasting break — more. A sign that you are getting too little: a headache by evening, weakness on the stairs, darkening vision when standing up. A sign that you are getting too much: thirst that cannot be quenched and swelling — rare on a low-carbohydrate diet.
Which salt
| Salt | Sodium | What else | Conclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular table salt | the same | nothing | works |
| Iodized | the same | iodine — needed by the thyroid | best choice |
| Sea salt | the same | trace minerals | works, more expensive |
| Himalayan pink salt | the same | traces of iron — the color | works, even more expensive |
| “Reduced-sodium salt” | half is potassium | potassium | not a substitute; get potassium from food |
Salt and blood pressure
The main fear. Facts: for most people on a low-carbohydrate diet, blood pressure falls on its own during the first few weeks — water is lost and insulin drops. At the same time, one third of people are salt-sensitive, and with diagnosed hypertension, salt intake should be discussed with a doctor; medications may need adjustment — blood pressure on the method often falls lower than expected. Rule: measure blood pressure in the morning for two weeks, and decide based on the numbers, not fear. About potassium, which lowers blood pressure — potassium from food.
Frequently asked questions
How can you tell that you are getting enough salt?
No evening headache, no weakness when standing up, and cramps are gone. This is the only “test” that works here.
Does salt during the fasting window break the fast?
No. Salt, water, tea and coffee without anything added do not interrupt the fasting break and make it easier to tolerate. In detail — salt and water during the fasting break.
Swelling from salt?
On a low-carbohydrate diet, swelling is more often caused by a lack of potassium and protein. If you have swelling with 3-5 g of salt, check your potassium, protein and thyroid.
