Water in hot weather and during training: how much and with what
In summer and on strength-training days, the water intake on the method is not two to three liters but three to four, and half of this water should contain salt. Up to a gram of sodium per hour is lost through sweat, and plain water only dilutes what remains. Hence “the workout isn’t going well,” a headache after a walk in hot weather, and cramps at night. Section — electrolytes and water.
0,5-1 l
sweat per hour of training
up to 1 g
sodium lost with a liter of sweat
+1 l
of water on a hot day
1/4 tsp.
salt per 500 ml
Signs that you are low on water and salt
Headache after a walk in the sun. Dark urine. Weakness and “heavy” legs during training, with a higher pulse at the same exertion. A calf cramp at night after a hot day. Dizziness when standing up. Dry mouth that water does not relieve — this is salt. Thirst comes late: if you drink only when thirsty in hot weather, a deficit is already present.
Water according to the situation
| Situation | How much | With what | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical day | 2-3 l | a pinch of salt in the first glass | throughout the day |
| Heat above 28° | 3-4 l | salt, 1/4 tsp. per 500 ml, twice | every 1-2 hours |
| Strength training 40-60 min | +0,5-0,7 l | salt before and after | 30 min before, after |
| Walking 1-2 hours in hot weather | +1 l | salt, water to take with you | every 20-30 min |
| Fasting window in summer | 2-3 l | salt required, lemon | morning and daytime |
| Bathhouse, sauna | +0,5-1 l | salt afterward | afterward |
Training: before, during, after
30 minutes beforehand — 300-500 ml of water with a quarter teaspoon of salt. During training — sip 150-200 ml every 15-20 minutes; for training lasting more than an hour, add salt. Afterward — 500 ml with salt and lemon, then food containing potassium: avocado, leafy greens, salmon. Sugary sports drinks are not needed on the method: sugar will raise insulin again, and they contain fewer electrolytes than salt water. About fasting and training — fasting and training; the basics — how much water to drink.
Fasting in summer
A food-free window is harder to tolerate in hot weather: no food means no salt from food. The rule: water with salt in the morning, broth or salted water during the day, magnesium in the evening. If you feel dizzy — salt, not food. If it does not go away within 20 minutes after salt, end the pause; this is not a failure. Details — salt and water during the pause.
Frequently asked questions
Does coffee count as water?
Partly: coffee’s diuretic effect is overestimated; a cup of coffee is almost a cup of water. But it is not salt. Take salt separately.
Can you drink too much water?
Yes — plain water without salt, liters consumed in a short time, can lower blood sodium and make the headache worse. Water with salt does not do this.
Mineral water instead of salt?
Medicinal-table water with 500+ mg/l of sodium — yes, it is convenient. Ordinary table water is almost sodium-free.
