Plate Rule: Half Vegetables, One Quarter Protein, One Quarter Fats
The plate rule is the only calculation needed in Anastasia’s method: half the plate is vegetables and greens, one quarter is protein, and one quarter is fats. It replaces calorie counting, weighing, and tables because it defines the composition rather than the quantity. Below is how this rule works, what to use to assemble each part, how it changes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and where people most often make mistakes.

Why does composition matter more than quantity?
The same number of calories can come from very different foods: a plate of vegetables, steak, and avocado — or a bun with a latte. The first keeps you full for four to five hours and barely raises insulin, while the second brings hunger back after an hour. That is why the method does not count calories: when the plate is assembled correctly, the amount regulates itself through satiety. Read more about this in the article why calories are not counted on LCHF.
The plate rule is a way to define the composition without numbers. Half the volume is vegetables, which provide fiber and bulk with almost no carbohydrates. A quarter is protein, which supports satiety and muscles. A quarter is fats, the primary fuel in low-carb nutrition and what makes food tasty and “long-lasting.” The entire method of Анастасии Жуковой grows from this rule: everything else is detail.
What to put in each quarter
| Part of the plate | What to put | How much | What not to put |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vegetables and greens — ½ | spinach, arugula, salads, all kinds of cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, broccoli, avocado, mushrooms, radishes | 150 г of salad per meal, 300 г per day | potatoes, corn, beets and carrots in large quantities |
| Protein — ¼ | eggs, beef, pork, chicken, lamb, fatty fish, seafood | 100-130 г of the product, 2-3 eggs | sausages with starch, breading, «protein» bars |
| Fats — ¼ | olive and butter, 20% sour cream, cheese from 45%, nuts, seeds | 1-2 ст. л. of oil, a slice of cheese, a handful of nuts | margarine, refined vegetable oils, «light» products |
| Plus | sauerkraut, oil-vinegar-salt dressing | at least 30 г of cabbage per day | ketchup, ready-made sauces with sugar |
How the rule changes by meal
The scheme is the same, but the plates are different. The first meal after the overnight break is the most substantial: 2-3 eggs with bacon or cheese, a large handful of greens with oil, half an avocado. Here, “a quarter of protein” means the eggs, “a quarter of fats” means the bacon, cheese and avocado, and the greens make up half. How to open the window so that satiety lasts until lunch is explained in the article first meal after a break.
Lunch is meat or fish with a side of vegetables cooked in oil: chicken drumsticks with cauliflower purée, steak with stewed zucchini. Dinner is the same, only fattier: fatty fish, vegetables, salad, a spoonful of sour cream, nuts. The evening plate should “last” until morning, so they do not skimp on fats here. Ready-made options are available in lunch and dinner: meat, fish and vegetables.
150 g salad with olive oil and apple cider vinegar. 2-3 eggs with bacon or cheese. Half an avocado. Coffee with cream. Keeps you going for 4-5 hours.
Salad or vegetables stewed in oil — half the plate. 120-150 g of meat or fish. A spoonful of sour cream, a slice of cheese or a handful of nuts.
Fatty fish or a 150 g steak. Vegetables cooked in oil and salad — half the plate. Sauerkraut. Don’t skimp on fats: dinner should keep you going until morning.
Fried eggs in butter, cucumbers and cheese — this also follows the plate rule. Quick meal ideas are in the article “what to cook when there’s no time”.
The rule is simple: half vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter fats.
Three mistakes that ruin the plate
First — the “half” turns into a “quarter”: a couple of lettuce leaves and a cucumber next to a large piece of meat. Vegetables are not decoration but half the volume: 150 g per meal, and you should reach 300 g of green salad over the course of the day. Without them, the plate is heavy, and your gut and satiety suffer. Why exactly 300 g — in the article 300 grams of salad.
Second — fats “for health” are cut back. Steamed chicken breast with salad and no oil is a plate from an old diet, not the method. On a low-carb diet, fats are the main fuel, and without them hunger and cravings for sweets arrive two hours later. Where to get fats and how much — fats at 70-80% of the diet.
Third — there is too little protein when judged “by eye.” One egg and a slice of cheese are not a quarter of the plate but a snack. A guideline is 100-130 g of protein-rich food per meal; with two meals a day — 150-200 g. In detail — protein on a low-carb diet.
The method plate
- 150 g of greens and vegetables, visible to the eye
- 120-150 g of meat or fish, 2-3 eggs
- Oil on the vegetables, cheese or avocado
- Oil-vinegar-salt dressing, sauerkraut
The plate that does not work
- Three lettuce leaves «for color»
- Steamed chicken breast, zero fat
- A side dish of rice, potatoes or pasta
- Bottled sauce with sugar, bread «for lunch»
How to assemble a plate in a minute
First, vegetables
Fill half the plate with greens, cabbage, cucumbers, and zucchini. This provides volume and fiber.
Then protein
A piece of meat or fish the size of your palm, 2-3 eggs. Fatty cuts are better than lean ones.
Fats on top
One or two spoonfuls of oil over the vegetables, a slice of cheese, half an avocado, or a handful of nuts.
Dressing and salt
Olive oil, apple cider vinegar, Himalayan or sea salt. Don’t be afraid of salt—it is needed on a low-carb diet.
Eat until satisfied
Not until the plate is “empty” and not until you feel heavy. Fullness comes after 15-20 minutes; haste outruns it.
Common mistakes
- Weighing and counting, even though the rule is meant precisely to avoid doing that
- Leaving vegetables for later — and not eating 300 g per day
- Cutting out fats “to lose weight faster” — and getting hungry two hours later
- Replacing protein with cheese and nuts: they are fats, not protein
- Adding “a little” grain or bread — the plate stops being low-carb
Frequently asked questions
Is the plate literally one plate?
It’s a proportion, not tableware. The salad can be in a separate bowl; the main thing is that half the volume of the meal is vegetables.
What should I do with fruit?
Fruit is excluded from the method, with one exception: a handful of berries—raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries. They are not included in the plate.
Do I need to limit meat?
No, but don’t pile it on either: excess protein is partly converted into glucose. A quarter of the plate is 100-130 г, enough to feel full, but no more.
How many meals a day does this rule allow?
Two or three, with no snacks. Each plate is assembled according to the same scheme; only the foods change.
