First meal after a break: how to build a plate
The first meal after a break determines what the entire day will be like: a substantial plate with protein, fats, and vegetables provides steady fullness for 4-5 hours, while a “light” breakfast of fruit or porridge brings back hunger and cravings for sweets after an hour. Below is how to put this plate together, what to add to it, how much to eat, and in what order.

¼

¼
fats

per meal
Why is the first meal after 14-16 hours more important than the others?
After the break, the stomach is empty, insulin is low, and the body is running on fat. Whatever you eat first will land on a “clean” baseline and determine the body's response for the next few hours. Protein and fats raise insulin gently and provide long-lasting satiety. Fast carbohydrates — bread, porridge, fruit, juice — raise glucose sharply, insulin responds in excess, and after an hour and a half to two hours, glucose drops lower than it was before. This is that very hunger “an hour after breakfast.”
The second point is quantity. After a break, many people eat cautiously, “so as not to overeat,” and as a result do not get enough food for the day. In Anastasia's method, the rule is the opposite: each meal should be eaten until comfortably full, the entire diet in two or three meals, with no snacks. The first plate is the most substantial, not the lightest. The article on intermittent fasting explains how the whole day is structured.
How to build a plate
| Part | Foods from the method | How much |
|---|---|---|
| Vegetables and greens | spinach, arugula, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, broccoli, avocado | half a plate; per day — 300 г green salad |
| Protein | eggs, beef, pork, chicken, fatty fish, seafood | 100-130 г of the product, 2-3 eggs |
| Fats | butter and olive oil, cheese from 45%, sour cream from 20%, nuts | 1-2 ст. л. of oil or a slice of cheese, a handful of nuts |
| Fermented | sauerkraut | from 30 г, gradually up to 100 г per day |
| Dressing | olive oil, apple cider vinegar, salt | 1-2 ст. л. of oil, 2 ч. л. of vinegar |
What order should you eat in: vegetables or protein first?
Order matters, and this is not esotericism. Studies in people with prediabetes have shown that if you eat vegetables and protein before carbohydrates, the post-meal glucose spike is noticeably lower than if you start with bread or rice. On a low-carb diet, there are hardly any carbohydrates on the plate, so the rule becomes simpler: start with salad and protein, and finish with fats. Starting with a salad dressed with oil and vinegar also provides fiber, which fills the stomach and slows down everything else.
There is also a second, practical argument: after a pause, the first bites are swallowed quickly. If they are bread or cheese, you will eat a lot before satiety arrives. If they are vegetables, you will lose nothing.
Ready-made options for the first plate can be found in the article about low-carb breakfast. If your first meal is after a workout, protein is the main component, and carbohydrates “for recovery” are not needed — more details in the article fasting and training. And when there are two meals, the first plate becomes even bigger — see two meals a day.
Two or three eggs with bacon or cheese, a large handful of greens with olive oil and vinegar, half an avocado. Coffee with cream. This is the classic first meal from Anastasia's method, and it keeps you going until 13:00 without thinking about food. More options—in the article about a low-carb breakfast.
If the window opens during the day, the first meal is a full lunch: 150 г of meat or fish, cauliflower purée or zucchini stewed in oil, and a 150 г salad. The second meal in the evening is the same size.
Protein first: 130-150 г of fish or meat, or 3 eggs, plus vegetables and fats. Carbohydrates “for recovery” are not needed on a low-carb diet—glycogen is restored without them too, just more slowly. Read more in the article about fasting and workouts.
When there are two meals, each one becomes larger: 150-200 г of a protein-rich food, a full plate of vegetables, and fats without holding back. The first plate is the most filling. How to switch without undereating—in the article about two meals a day.
Every day, eat a total of one large bowl of green salad — 300 g. You can divide it into two meals.
What not to eat first after a break
Fruit and juice. That means fructose and glucose on an empty stomach — the fastest way to feel hungry an hour later. In Anastasia's method, fruit is excluded entirely, with one exception — a handful of berries: raspberries, strawberries, blueberries.
Porridge, bread, toast, muesli. Even “whole-grain” varieties. Carbohydrates after a break cause a spike in glucose, followed by cravings for sweets all day long.
Just coffee with something small. A cookie with coffee, cottage cheese, yogurt — that's a snack, not a meal. It opens the eating window but doesn't satisfy you, and an hour later you want to eat again — that's how snacking habits arise, which the regimen helps eliminate. How to stop snacking is a separate topic.
Too much at once. If after a break you eat until you feel heavy and sleepy, the portion is too large. The guideline is comfortable satiety, not a “full stomach.” Satiety comes 15-20 minutes after you start eating, so eating slowly isn't magazine advice but a practical technique.
First plate in five steps
A glass of water 10-15 minutes before eating
With a pinch of salt if the morning was sluggish. This replenishes sodium and relieves false hunger.
Start with salad
Greens, cucumbers, cabbage with olive oil and apple cider vinegar. 150 g — half the daily allowance.
Then protein
Eggs, meat, fish — 100-130 g. Fatty cuts are preferable to lean ones: they keep you satiated longer.
Fats together with protein
Avocado, cheese, oil in the frying pan, a spoonful of sour cream. They keep you satiated until the next meal.
Stop at comfortable fullness
Don’t finish eating “for company”. If you’re still hungry after half an hour — add protein, not bread.
Common mistakes with the first meal
- Start with fruit, juice, or porridge “for lightness”
- Eat a “small snack” instead of a meal
- Skip vegetables and fats, leaving only protein
- Eat standing up in five minutes — satiety doesn't have time to set in
- Eat too little, then snack all day
Frequently asked questions
Can I start my eating window with something sweet if I really want to?
Better not: sweets on an empty stomach cause the sharpest spike in glucose. Eat protein and fats, then check again after 20 minutes — most often, the craving for sweets goes away.
Is cottage cheese or yogurt a suitable first meal?
Cottage cheese from 9% is allowed in the method in limited amounts, and yogurt is allowed if it is unsweetened and full-fat. But both are additions, not the foundation. The foundation of the first plate is eggs, meat, or fish with vegetables.
Is it necessary to eat the salad first?
No, but it makes it easier to eat 300 g a day and not overeat the main food. If salad does not work for you first, eat it together with protein.
How many times a day should I eat if my window is 8 hours?
Two or three meals. Three are more convenient during the first week; after that, two are enough for many people. There are no snacks between them in either case.
