Gallbladder and fats: how to increase them without triggering an attack
Low-fat diets have done something harmful to the gallbladder: it barely worked for years, while bile stagnated and thickened. You start the method, fats triple in a day — and it has to release everything at once. Heaviness under the ribs on the right, a bitter taste in the mouth, nausea after fatty food — that is the gallbladder. Section — heartburn, gallbladder, sensitive intestines.
How it works and why it becomes sluggish
The liver produces bile continuously; the gallbladder stores it and releases it when fat enters the intestine. No fat means no release, bile stagnates, cholesterol precipitates from it, and gallstones form. This is why gallstones are more common in people who followed low-fat diets and lost weight quickly. Fat in food is not the gallbladder’s enemy but its training. However, it must be trained gradually.
How to increase fats with a “sluggish” gallbladder
Fats by 10% per week
From 30% to 65-70% over four weeks. Not in one day.
Three meals, not six
Each meal — a full release of bile. Snacks only make it contract intermittently.
Bitters and something sour before meals
Arugula, chicory, lemon in water 10-15 minutes before eating — a signal for the gallbladder to prepare.
Fat with protein and vegetables
Not a spoonful of oil on its own. Fat as part of a meal is digested where it needs to be.
Movement after meals
A 20-minute walk helps bile flow. Lying down after fatty food causes stagnation.
Situations
| Situation | Method | Specifics |
|---|---|---|
| Healthy, “sluggish” gallbladder | yes | increase fats gradually, bitters, 3 meals |
| Gallstones without attacks | with a doctor | increase fats very gradually; ultrasound before and in 3 months; stop if pain occurs |
| Gallstones with attacks | treatment first | a sudden increase in fat can trigger an attack |
| Gallbladder removed | yes | bile flows in a thin stream: have small amounts of fat at each meal, not one large portion |
| Dyskinesia | yes | bitters, routine, three meals — the method’s structure itself provides treatment |
Without a gallbladder
The method is possible and often works well, but with one adjustment: there is no reservoir, so bile flows from the liver into the intestine continuously in a thin stream. A large portion of fat at once causes loose stools. The solution is to distribute fats evenly across three meals, without coffee with oil or MCT, and include vegetables at every meal as a “sponge.” During the first months, use 50-55% fat instead of 70%, increasing it according to how you feel. About loose stools — loose stools and fats.
See a doctor
- Pain under the ribs on the right lasting more than two hours
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stool
- Fever with pain on the right
- Nausea and vomiting after fatty food that do not go away
- Gallstones on ultrasound — before starting the method, not afterward
Frequently asked questions
Does rapid weight loss promote gallstones — is the method dangerous?
Rapid weight loss on a low-fat diet promotes gallstones: bile stagnates. With the method, fat at every meal keeps the gallbladder working. But if gallstones already exist, proceed with a doctor’s guidance and gradually.
Ursodeoxycholic acid — is it needed?
This is a doctor’s prescription for gallstones and stagnation. By itself, it does not replace the gradual introduction of fats.
A bitter taste in the mouth in the morning?
Bile reflux at night after a late fatty dinner is common. Have dinner before 19, reduce the fat content, and raise the head of the bed.
- Heartburn and reflux: why they go away without sugar and when they get worseFor most people, heartburn resolves within 2–3 weeks on the method. For some, it gets worse in the first few days from coffee on an empty stomach and fat without food. What to do in both cases and when to see a doctor.
- Stomach acidity: why protein “sits” there and what to do about itAfter 45, while taking omeprazole and with gastritis, there is little acid, and meat is difficult to digest. Signs, simple tools — lemon, bitters, chewing — and talking to a doctor about omeprazole.
- IBS and low-carb eating: why the belly settles downIrritable bowel syndrome is fueled by fermentable carbohydrates — sugar, flour, onions, apples, sweeteners. The method removes most of them. What remains and what to do about it.
- Digestion and fasting: why the gut loves pausesDuring a pause without food, the gut turns on “clean-up,” which does not start with snacks. Why bloating and IBS quiet down during fasting, how to end the pause, and what happens with the gallbladder.
- Microbiome on a Low-Carb Diet: Who Lives in the Gut Without SugarBacteria eat what you eat. Without sugar and flour, the composition changes in a month: less gas and fewer cravings for sweets, more butyric acid. What happens and how to help.
- Dairy and gluten: test them for 30 days instead of guessingThe two most common intolerances. Lactose and casein are different problems; gluten disappears on the method by itself. An elimination and reintroduction protocol that gives an honest answer without tests.
