Digestion and fasting: why the gut loves pauses
The gut is the only organ that can clean up after itself, but only when it is not being fed. Every one and a half to two hours without food, a wave passes through it — the migrating motor complex — sweeping leftovers and bacteria into the large intestine. With six meals a day, this wave never starts. With three meals and a fasting window, it starts every day. Section — microbiome and intolerances.
What happens during a pause
The first 4 hours after eating are for digestion. Then comes “clean-up”: waves of peristalsis, the release of bile and enzymes without food to process, and a reduction in bacteria in the small intestine. The mucous membrane renews itself. Inflammation in the intestinal wall decreases. That is exactly why bloating and IBS quiet down for many people during fasting: the bacteria in the small intestine have nothing to eat, so they do not multiply where they should not. The basis of fasting is intermittent fasting; IBS — IBS and low-carb eating.

Less often is normal: less food, fewer waste products. Constipation is not: if stools are hard and passing them requires effort, you are not getting enough water, salt, and magnesium during the pause. In a food-free window, they are essential: salted water in the morning, magnesium in the evening. Loose stools after ending the pause mean too much fat in the first meal. The first meal after a pause
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Protein and vegetables, a little fat | the gallbladder and pancreas wake up gradually |
| A regular portion, not a double one | a stretched stomach — heartburn and heaviness |
| No coffee with butter and MCT when ending the pause | fat on an empty stomach after a pause — loose stools |
| Slowly, chew | acid and enzymes are released from the first bite |
| A spoonful of sauerkraut | acid helps digest protein |
Who fasting is not suitable for from a gastrointestinal perspective
Active ulcers and erosions — acid without food causes irritation. Gallstones with attacks — a long pause followed by fatty food can trigger an attack; treatment comes first. Gastritis with severe heartburn on an empty stomach — make the window shorter, 12/12, and use water with salt, not coffee. Taking medications that must be taken with food. In all other cases, the gut loves a pause — it is its natural mode. The first meal in detail — the first meal after a pause.
Frequently asked questions
Gurgling during a pause — is it hunger?
This is that very clean-up wave. It is loud and means that the gut is working. It is not a signal to eat.
Heartburn on an empty stomach during a pause?
During the first weeks, the stomach releases acid out of habit. Water with a pinch of salt, not coffee; shorten the window by one hour for two weeks. Longer than that — see a doctor.
Probiotics during a pause or with food?
With food — acid on an empty stomach kills bacteria. Sauerkraut — with the first meal.
