Kitchen as an environment: what you see is what you eat
In one company’s office, candies were moved from open bowls into opaque jars with lids. After a week, people ate one third less — the same people, with the same character and the same willpower. The brain saves effort: what is visible and easy gets done; what needs to be taken out and opened does not. The method starts not with determination, but with rearrangement. Section — how habits work.
One-evening audit
| Zone | Remove | Put in plain sight |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator, eye level | sugary sauces, sweet yogurts, juices | boiled eggs, cottage cheese, sliced cheese, sliced cucumbers and peppers, lemon water |
| Cupboards | flour, sugar, grains, cookies, “healthy” bars | 30 g packets of nuts, 85% dark chocolate, canned fish, olive oil |
| Table | a bowl of anything | a jug of water, salt, lemon |
| Freezer | dumplings, ready-made meals | meat in portions, fish, berries, vegetables |
| Family sweets | at eye level | top shelf, closed opaque box |
| Dumbbells | in the cupboard | by the sofa, in plain sight |
Principle: make the right choice easy and the wrong choice far away
Not “remove everything unhealthy” — that is often impossible with a family — but make it so that getting to the right choice takes zero steps, while getting to the wrong one takes five. Boiled eggs in a container on the first shelf — zero steps. Cookies on a mezzanine in a box — a chair, a box, a lid. At 22:00, a tired brain will choose the eggs, not because it is strong, but because it is lazy. The loop this breaks is the habit loop.
Office, bag, phone
Office: 30 g of nuts and cheese in your desk drawer — then having tea with colleagues without cookies takes no effort. Bag: a packet of nuts and water with salt — “there’s nothing to eat” stops being a reason to buy a pastry. Phone: delete delivery apps or remove them from the home screen — three extra steps at 22:00 matter more than character. Unfollow food-related social media: a signal you do not see cannot trigger a response.

Mistakes
- “Sweets for the children” in plain sight are your sweets at 22:00
- Keep “one pack for unexpected guests”
- Remove unhealthy food but do not put anything healthy in its place — an empty refrigerator leads to delivery
- Nuts in a large bag — handfuls instead of portions
- Dumbbells in the cupboard “so they don’t get in the way”
Frequently asked questions
My husband is against the audit.
His products — his shelf, closed and up high. Yours — at eye level. An agreement about zones works better than arguments about food.
I can’t throw food away — it feels wasteful.
Give it to neighbors, colleagues, or a charity. Or eat it over the week and do not buy it again. The key is not to buy it again.
How is this connected to willpower?
Exactly — and that is the point. The environment works when willpower is absent: in the evening, under stress, when tired.
