Bloating on a low-carb diet: cabbage, sweeteners, nuts
In the evening, your stomach looks six months pregnant, even though you ate “all the right things”. Right, yes—but you were not used to them and ate them in the wrong amounts. Bloating on this method almost always has three or four specific causes, and each can be identified within a week by simple elimination. Section — digestion when changing your diet.
Five culprits
| What | Why | How to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower | raffinose — a sugar that bacteria consume, producing gas | remove raw vegetables for 5 days | boil, stew, bake; start raw vegetables with a spoonful |
| Onion, garlic | fructans | remove for 5 days | heat treatment helps partially; with IBS — exclude them |
| Erythritol, sorbitol, maltitol, xylitol | are not absorbed and ferment in the large intestine | remove “keto sweets” | stevia or nothing |
| Handfuls of nuts | fat + fiber + phytates in large amounts | limit to 30 g | 30 g per day, not 200 |
| A sudden increase in vegetables | the bacteria have not adapted yet | reduce to 300 g for a week | increase by 50 g every 3 days |
How to find your cause
Don’t eliminate everything at once—you won’t know what helped. In order of likelihood: for the first five days, eat all cruciferous vegetables only boiled or stewed; if the bloating goes away, you’ve found the cause. If not, spend the next five days without “keto desserts” or gum with sorbitol. Then reduce nuts to 30 g. Then remove onion and garlic. At every step, make a note of how your stomach feels in the evening on a scale from 1 to 5. Usually, the culprit is found at the first or second step.
When it’s not food
Bloating after any food, every day, with pain and altered bowel movements lasting longer than a month is no longer just adaptation. It may be irritable bowel syndrome, dairy intolerance, or, less often, bacterial overgrowth. Read more in IBS and low-carb eating and dairy and gluten. Red flags—blood, unintentional weight loss, nighttime pain—mean seeing a doctor without experimenting.
What helps right away
- Walk for 20-30 min after eating
- Eat slowly, chew, and don’t talk with your mouth full — less air
- Warm water or mint herbal tea after eating
- A spoonful of sauerkraut with lunch—but not a glass of kefir on a bloated day
- Three meals instead of six—the intestines need breaks
Frequently asked questions
So, can’t you eat cabbage?
You can eat it cooked. Start raw with 50 g and increase gradually. After a month, the bacteria will adapt, and a raw cabbage salad will stop making you bloated.
But erythritol is “safe”, isn’t it?
For blood sugar—yes. For the intestines, 10-15 g at a time causes gas and loose stools in many people. If you eat keto desserts every day, this is the first thing to remove.
Probiotics for bloating?
Sometimes they help, sometimes they make things worse. First find the cause in your food—it’s more reliable and free.
