Metabolic flexibility: why some can go 16 hours without eating while others «crash» after three
Your friend calmly goes without food until lunch, while three hours after breakfast you are shaking and unable to think. The difference is not willpower or «constitution». Her switch to fat works; yours has rusted from six carbohydrate meals a day. You have 20-30 kg of fat — 200 000 kcal of fuel — but your body cannot reach it. Section — metabolic flexibility.
How the switch works
You eat carbohydrates — insulin rises — the body burns glucose and closes access to fat. 3-4 hours pass — insulin falls — the body opens access to fat and switches to it. Overnight — on fat, breakfast — back again. In a flexible body, these transitions are unnoticeable. The problem: with frequent carbohydrates, insulin does not have time to fall — access to fat is always closed, and the enzymes that burn it «sleep» because they are not needed. Sugar runs out — fat is unavailable — panic: shaking, hunger, brain fog, anger. This is exactly «can’t go without snacks».
Flexibility: present or absent
| Situation | No flexibility | Flexibility |
|---|---|---|
| 3-4 hours without food | shaking, brain fog, anger | steady |
| Morning without breakfast | impossible | fine until 11-12 |
| After lunch | sleepiness | energy |
| Fasted workout | vision goes dark | manageable |
| Craving sweets | every day | rarely |
| Night | wake up hungry | steady |

How to restore it: day by day
Days 1-3: without sugar and flour, insulin falls, the kidneys release water and sodium — headache, weakness; this is salt and water, not hunger. Days 4-10: fat-burning enzymes wake up, ketones appear, workout performance is slightly lower. Days 10-21: hunger between meals disappears, the 14/10 window passes unnoticed, energy is steadier than on carbohydrates. Week 4+: 16/8 without effort, fasted workouts are manageable, cravings for sweets are rare. Whoever quits on day 5 has not reached the switch. Ketones as an indicator — ketones without mysticism, salt — salt on a low-carb diet.
What interferes with the switch
- «A little» sugar every day — insulin does not fall
- «Healthy» snacks — handfuls of nuts every two hours
- Salt removed — the transition looks like an illness
- 5 hours of sleep — cortisol keeps sugar elevated
- Quit on day 5
Frequently asked questions
Is flexibility keto?
No. Keto is one way to restore it. Flexibility is the ability to switch, and after adaptation, a handful of berries or a plate of vegetables does not break it.
How soon will I lose it again if I return to sugar?
With sugar six times a day — in 2-3 weeks. With infrequent intake — it is not lost. It returns faster than the first time.
How can I check that flexibility has returned?
Skip breakfast and check yourself at 12: steady, clear-headed, calmly hungry — it has returned. Shaking and brain fog — not yet.
- Ketones without the mystery: what they are, where they come from, and why you don't need to chase themWhen fat burns quickly, the liver turns it into ketones — fuel for the brain. 0,5-3 mmol/L is normal without carbohydrates, not ketoacidosis. What they mean, how to measure them, and why strips aren't needed.
- Metabolic syndrome checklist: five numbers in one visitWaist, triglycerides, HDL, blood pressure, glucose. Three out of five — syndrome, and weight has nothing to do with it. How to check yourself, what each item means, and why after six months of the method they are usually zero.
- Energy crashes after eating: why you feel sleepy after lunchLunch — and an hour later you can't work. It's not that you "overate"; it's a roller coaster: blood sugar rises, insulin overshoots, and blood sugar drops below normal. Reactive hypoglycemia, the afternoon slump, and how to eat so you have energy after a meal.
- Sugar swings: why you are hungry again two hours after eatingA teaspoon of sugar in five liters of blood is normal. A bun adds three more, the pancreas removes them with a surplus, and two hours later comes hunger, brain fog, and cravings. What the swings look like and why they do not happen after an omelet.
- Fatty liver: the organ that responds to sugar firstThe liver is the only organ that processes fructose, and it stores the excess in itself. One in four adults has fatty liver without symptoms. How to suspect what is causing it and why it recovers in 2-4 months.
- HbA1c and prediabetes: the number your doctor calls “borderline”5,7-6,4% — prediabetes, and half of people develop diabetes within 5-10 years. This is the last moment when everything can be reversed through food. Ranges, what the number means, a three-month plan, and when to retest.
