Pregnancy and breastfeeding: where to pause the method
There is one period when the fasting window is removed from the method entirely: pregnancy and breastfeeding. No 16/8, no “light” fasting. The body is building a person, and it needs food without pauses. This does not mean that you need to eat for two and go back to sugar—the low-carb plate remains and helps prevent excess weight gain. One thing changes: no calorie deficit and no time restrictions. Section — women’s body: special situations.
Pregnancy
First trimester — calories as usual, second — plus 300, third — plus 450. This is one additional dish, not doubling. Protein 1.5-1.8 g/kg: it builds the baby's tissues and preserves your muscles. Fats are essential — the baby's brain and your hormones are made from them: fatty fish, eggs, avocado, oil. Carbohydrates — vegetables, berries, a little starchy vegetables and grains if desired: strict restriction to ketosis during pregnancy has not been studied for safety, so it is not practiced. Sugar and flour — still no: gestational diabetes affects one in ten pregnant women, and low sugar intake is its best prevention.
What Is Important by Trimester
| Trimester | Calories | Protein | Special considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | as usual | 1,5 g/kg | folic acid, iodine—as prescribed; nausea: small, frequent meals |
| 2nd | +300 kcal | 1,6 g/kg | iron and ferritin—monitoring; glucose tolerance test at 24-28 weeks |
| 3rd | +450 kcal | 1,8 g/kg | calcium, D, omega-3; heartburn: eat dinner earlier, smaller portions |
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding uses 450-500 kcal a day — more than pregnancy. This is the only period when a calorie deficit harms two people at once: milk supply decreases, and weight often does not come off because the body holds on to reserves under stress. Eat your usual amount plus 450-500, drink 3 liters of water, and consume salt as usual. A low-carb plate is fine: protein, fats, vegetables, and berries. Ketosis — no: ketones enter the milk, and safety has not been proven. Fasting — no. For most women, weight comes off on its own during months 6-12 of breastfeeding if their diet consists of whole foods and they get at least some sleep.
Workouts
With an uncomplicated pregnancy, strength training with light weights and walking are permitted and beneficial, with a doctor’s approval. After giving birth, for the first 8-12 weeks, do only pelvic floor exercises and walking. Then bodyweight squats, followed by weights. Jumping and running should wait until the pelvic floor and diastasis have been checked. Haste here costs more than waiting.
How to return to the method after breastfeeding
Wait for regular sleep
A fasting window during night feedings is cortisol. The first step is a night without awakenings at least 5 out of 7.
12/12 window
First two weeks. Dinner before 20, breakfast after 8.
An hour per week
12/12 → 13/11 → 14/10. Go further only if the cycle has returned and is stable.
Tests
Ferritin, TSH, vitamin D — after childbirth and breastfeeding, deficiencies are almost universal. Restore them before starting a strict regimen.
Strength training after the pelvic floor
Check for leakage and diastasis. None — weights are fine. Present — recovery first.
Frequently asked questions
I found out I was pregnant while doing 16/8. What should I do?
Stop fasting today. Eat three or four times a day, with the same plate, without sugar or flour. See a doctor with your test results.
Can I do keto while breastfeeding to lose weight faster?
No. Ketones in breast milk, a drop in milk supply, and stress for you. A low-carb plate without ketosis—yes.
Gestational diabetes—does the method help?
Reducing sugar and flour is the basis of its control, and doctors recommend it. But without fasting and without ketosis, under the supervision of an endocrinologist.
- Hair and skin on a low-carb diet: what happens2-3 months after changing your diet, your hair may shed more heavily—and this is not because of carbs. Three real reasons, what to check and what to eat.
- Stress, Cortisol, and Weight in Women: “I eat less, but I’m gaining weight”Chronic stress and lack of sleep keep cortisol high, while cortisol stores fat around the abdomen and disrupts the menstrual cycle. Why fasting is harmful here and what to do first.
- Pelvic floor: the muscle without which strength training doesn't workAfter childbirth and with age, the pelvic floor weakens: leakage, heaviness, a protruding belly despite slim sides. How to check, what to do, and which exercises to avoid.
