Hair and skin on a low-carb diet: what happens
You changed your diet, the weight started coming off, and two months later there was twice as much hair on your comb. Your first thought is, “It’s because of the carbs—I need to quit.” This is the most expensive mistake: the cause is almost never carbohydrates, and if you quit them, you’ll regain the weight while your hair will keep falling out for another month anyway. Section — women’s bodies: special situations.
Telogen Effluvium: What It Is
Hair lives in a cycle: it grows for 2-6 years, then rests and falls out. Any stress on the body — sudden weight loss, illness, childbirth, a deficiency, intense emotional distress — shifts some hairs into the resting phase at the same time. After 2-4 months, they all fall out together. This is telogen effluvium; it is temporary and goes away if the underlying cause is not perpetuated. The peak comes precisely in the second or third month of the new regimen, and the coincidence looks like a connection.
Three reasons that intensify
First is a calorie deficit. A sharp drop to 1200 kcal is interpreted by the body as starvation, so it economizes on hair. Second is protein below 1,2 g/kg: hair is protein, and it comes last in line. Third is low ferritin: in a third of women, it is below 30 even before changing their diet, and it drops further during a deficit. Less often, it is the thyroid gland, zinc deficiency, or vitamin D deficiency. Carbohydrates are absent from this list. More details about iron — iron and fatigue.
What to check
| Metric | Normal range for hair | What to do if out of range |
|---|---|---|
| Ferritin | 50-70 µg/L and above | iron from food, if below 30 — supplements as prescribed |
| Protein per day | 1,4-1,6 g/kg | meat, fish, eggs at every meal |
| Calories | not below the calculated norm | eliminate the deficit, keep the window |
| TSH | 0,4-4,0 | see an endocrinologist if out of range |
| Vitamin D | 40-60 ng/mL | supplement as prescribed |
| Zinc | according to the test | meat, seafood, seeds |
Skin: usually gets better
Sugar and flour are the main acne triggers through insulin and androgens. Remove them—breakouts disappear in most women within 4-8 weeks. Dairy also triggers acne in some people, and if acne persists, try eliminating it for a month. Dryness in the first weeks is about water and electrolytes: on a low-carb diet, you need more of them. Fats on the plate—avocado, fatty fish, olive oil—the skin notices them first.
3-Month Plan
Don’t give up
Hair that has entered the resting phase will fall out anyway. If you quit, you’ll lose the result, not save your hair.
Eliminate the deficiency
Bring your calories up to normal. Keep the window, don’t bring back snacks. The deficit is created by breaks, not hunger.
Protein and iron
Liver once a week, red meat 3-4 times, eggs daily. Vitamin C on the plate, coffee an hour later.
Tests
Ferritin, TSH, vitamin D, zinc. Without them, you’re guessing.
Wait four months
New hair becomes visible 3-4 months after eliminating the cause — short hairs sticking up at the roots. This is a sign that everything is working.
Frequently asked questions
Will biotin and hair vitamins help?
Biotin helps only in cases of deficiency, which are rare. Actual deficiencies in women include iron, vitamin D, and protein. Get tested instead of buying a supplement complex.
Does fasting increase hair loss?
The 14/10-16/8 window itself does not, if calorie intake is adequate. Long fasts and a calorie deficit do. While your hair is shedding, keep the window no longer than 14/10.
When should I see a trichologist?
If hair loss lasts more than 6 months, you have bald patches, or your hair is thinning along the part, while your test results are normal. It may be androgenetic hair loss, which is treated differently.
