Fasting and the cycle: when 16/8 works and when it causes harm
The female body monitors food availability more closely than the male body: reproduction is costly, and at the first hint of hunger, the hypothalamus reduces sex hormones first. Therefore, the same 16/8 window leads to fat loss in a man, while in a woman, under unfavorable circumstances, it can disrupt the cycle. This does not mean that women cannot fast. It means that fasting should be adapted to the phases. The basics of fasting are on the intermittent fasting page, and the women’s section is cycle and hormones.
Follicular phase: the fasting window is easy to maintain
From the end of your period to ovulation, estrogen rises, insulin works at its best, and your appetite is calm. This is the best week for 16/8 and even 18/6, for hard fasted workouts, and for taking measurements. If you want to try extending the window, do it here, not at random.
Luteal phase: a shorter window
After ovulation, expenditure increases by 100-300 kcal, appetite is higher, insulin sensitivity is lower, and cortisol responds more sharply to hunger. Long fasting here affects progesterone and sleep. The practical norm is 14/10, and 12/12 with pronounced PMS. This is not a setback; it is part of the method. Why appetite increases — in the article appetite and the cycle.
Window by phases
| Cycle days | Window | Fasted workouts | Long fasts 24+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-5 menstruation | 12/12-14/10 | no | no |
| 6-13 | 16/8, 18/6 is possible | yes | possible if experienced |
| 14-16 ovulation | 16/8 | yes | no |
| 17-28 | 14/10, 12/12 with PMS | light | no |
Signs that fasting is currently too much for you
Your cycle has shifted by more than 5 days or disappeared. You feel cold, especially in your hands and feet. Your sleep is interrupted at 3-4 a.m. Your hair is shedding more heavily. Irritability and tears for no reason. Your cravings have become obsessive. Any two of these signs — shorten the fasting window to 12/12 for a month, bring calories up to maintenance, and check cortisol and stress. If your cycle has not returned within two months — see a gynecologist.
Fasting Rules for Women
- Start with 12/12, extending it by one hour per week
- A window longer than 16 hours is only for the follicular phase
- Calories within the window should not be below the recommended amount: fasting is not a diet
- Salt and water are essential during the fasting window
- Do not fast during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with a history of eating disorders
Frequently Asked Questions
My period has stopped on 16/8. What should I do?
12/12 window, calories at the recommended level, strength training instead of intervals, 7-8 hours of sleep. If your cycle has not returned after 2 months, see a gynecologist and get tests: FSH, LH, estradiol, TSH, prolactin.
Can I fast during my period?
Gently — 12/12-14/10. You have less energy, iron is lost, and prolonged fasting is poorly tolerated. This is not the time for experiments.
16/8 is easy for my husband, but not for me. Why?
The female hypothalamus is more sensitive to a deficit: it protects reproduction. You need the same window, but adapted to the phases, and not below the recommended calorie level.
