Magnesium: cramps, sleep, and sugar cravings
Your calf cramps at night. Your eyelid twitches. You take an hour to fall asleep, and by evening you crave chocolate so intensely that you cannot think about anything else. This is not your character and not “stress” — it is a lack of magnesium caused by a low-carb diet. It leaves the body in urine along with sodium when insulin drops, and the first weeks of the method are the most common time for deficiency. Section — vitamins and minerals.
What magnesium does
Three hundred reactions in the body: relaxing muscles after contraction, transmitting nerve signals, sleep, energy production, insulin sensitivity, and converting vitamin D into its active form. When there is too little, the muscle contracts and cannot relax — a cramp. The nervous system cannot slow down — poor sleep and anxiety. The body asks for a quick way to raise magnesium and serotonin — chocolate.
Signs of deficiency
- Cramps in the calves and feet, more often at night
- An eyelid or muscle twitches
- You take a long time to fall asleep, you wake up at 3-4
- Cravings for chocolate and sweets in the evening
- Constipation
- Tension headaches, migraine
- Rapid heartbeat without a reason
Forms of magnesium
| Form | Absorption | What it is for | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citrate | good | constipation, cramps | gently loosens the stool — a plus for constipation |
| Glycinate (bisglycinate) | excellent | sleep, anxiety | does not loosen the stool, the gentlest |
| Malate | good | fatigue, muscles | for daytime use |
| Taurate | good | heart, blood pressure | for palpitations |
| Oxide | 4-5% | none | the cheapest and useless |
How much and when
300-400 mg of elemental magnesium per day, in the evening an hour before bed — it relaxes you. For cramps, the effect appears in 3-7 days; for sleep, in one to two weeks. Look for “elemental magnesium” on the label, not the weight of the salt: 1000 mg of magnesium citrate contains about 160 mg of magnesium itself. Food provides some: leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, almonds, avocado, 85% dark chocolate, and oily fish. Fully meeting your needs through food on a low-carb diet is difficult, so a supplement is one of the few justified options.
Why a blood test is not indicative
Only one percent of magnesium is in the blood; the rest is in cells and bones. The body keeps the blood level stable by taking magnesium from the bones, so a test may show a normal result despite a real deficiency. Use symptoms and diet as your guide. If confirmation is really needed, test magnesium in red blood cells, but two weeks of supplementation and observation is simpler. How this relates to other electrolytes — cramps and headaches.
Frequently asked questions
Magnesium loosens the stool — what should you do?
Switch from citrate to glycinate. Or split the dose into two.
Can it be taken continuously?
Yes. It is a mineral, not a medicine. Excess is excreted by the kidneys. The only precaution is kidney disease; in that case, consult a doctor.
Does magnesium help with weight loss?
Not directly. Indirectly, yes: sleep improves, sugar cravings decrease, and insulin works more precisely. This becomes noticeable on the scales after a month.
