What to remove from the fridge before starting
Everything that causes a rapid rise in blood sugar goes: sugar, bread and baked goods, grains, potatoes and corn, sweet fruit, juices and soda, and underground vegetables except onions and garlic. Hidden sugar in ready-made sauces, dressings, and «healthy» products also goes.
What should you remove, and why?
| Remove | Reason |
|---|---|
| Sugar, honey, syrups | direct fast sugar |
| Bread, baked goods, pasta | starch that behaves like sugar |
| Grains and flakes | the same thing, including «healthy» ones |
| Potatoes, corn, beets | underground vegetables store starch |
| Sweet fruit and dried fruit | a lot of sugar in a small volume |
| Juices, soda, sweet tea | half the daily allowance in one glass |
| Sausages and convenience foods | sugar and starch in the ingredients |
| Low-fat products | the removed fat is usually replaced with sugar |
Why remove it instead of simply «eating less»?
Because the decision is made once, not every evening.
As long as a pack of cookies is in the cupboard, you make the choice again every time you walk past it. After a week of fatigue or a bad day, the choice will not be in your favor — and it is not about willpower, but about the number of attempts.
An empty shelf removes the choice itself. It is the least effort-intensive step of all eight.
What should you do if you live with a family?
Remove your own food, not someone else’s. Giving ultimatums to your family is a bad start that ends in conflict and everything returning to the shelves.
A workable option: you have your own shelf in the fridge and your own cupboard. Shared foods — vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, and butter — are foods everyone eats. The family can keep separately what you do not need, but it should not be in plain sight or on the table.
Sweets in a visible place are not a test of character, but simply twenty extra decisions a day.
Which vegetables remain?
What grows above the ground: lettuce and leafy greens, all types of cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, broccoli, asparagus, spinach, bell peppers, and tomatoes in reasonable amounts.
Underground vegetables are removed, except onions and garlic — they go into almost every dish and do not make a noticeable contribution to carbohydrates.
What do people most often get wrong?
- Keep one pack of cookies «just in case»
- Replace sugar with honey and agave syrup
- Buy «keto products» instead of ordinary food
- Remove the food but keep the sugary drinks
- Throw everything out of the house and quarrel with the family
When this does not apply
You should not sharply eliminate carbohydrates on your own during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with type 1 diabetes, or with type 2 diabetes if you use insulin or medications that carry a risk of hypoglycemia: the doses need adjustment.
With an eating disorder now or in the past, a list of forbidden foods can itself become a problem — make such decisions with a specialist.
Where should you put what you removed?
Give it away rather than throw it out. Grains, pasta, and canned foods can easily go to relatives, colleagues, or a food donation point.
Throwing away a full shelf of food is psychologically difficult, and some people postpone starting for weeks because of it. Giving it away is easier.
What is worth throwing away after all? Opened packs of sweets. Giving them away is awkward, while keeping them at home «until I finish them» means never starting at all.
Do you need to finish what is left?
No, and this is the most common reason for postponing the start.
The logic of «I’ll finish it and start on Monday» does not work: there is always something left in the house, and Monday gets postponed for weeks. Besides, finishing it means eating exactly what you are trying to leave behind, usually in larger quantities.
The money has already been spent — finishing the food will not bring it back, but it will push the start further away.
What should you remove first if doing everything at once feels too difficult?
Liquid sugar: juices, soda, sweet coffee, and sweet tea.
This is the least effort-intensive step: your food does not change at all, while half of your daily carbohydrate allowance disappears on its own. Many people notice at this stage that they no longer crave sweets in the evening.
As a second step, remove what is in plain sight and gets eaten without hunger: candies in a bowl, cookies by the kettle, and nuts on the desk.
